On August 1st, 2023, Minnesota became the 23rd state to legalize cannabis for recreational use. The new law allows adults (21 and older) to possess up to 2 ounces of cannabis or eight grams of cannabis concentrates such as waxes and oils for personal use. Furthermore, home cultivation of 8 plants per household is legal with a maximum of eight plants in total per residence. Smoking marijuana in public remains illegal, just like consuming alcohol in public spaces.
The state also began setting up a system that will let people apply online for licenses to sell cannabis products legally in Minnesota. Retail sales are expected to start by 2025 at the earliest and until then medical marijuana dispensaries will remain open, serving patients with conditions approved by MOCM - Minneosta Office of Cannabis Management.
With the passage of this new law, Minnesota has become yet another state to recognize the therapeutic value of cannabis and open its markets to medical and recreational use. This is a significant milestone in the battle to remove stigma around legal THC consumption.
